Director of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe
By Duncan Rize

After fifty years of being one of the best-loved classics for children, C. S. Lewis’s The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is now being adapted into a film by director, producer, writer Andrew Adamson. Born in New Zealand on December 1, 1966, this film director’s passions lie in the animation and visual effects field of filmmaking.

The prolific Adamson was once an animation and effects artist, and is highly skilled in the field of visual effects and animation. Some of the most famous works under his belt include Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, both nominees for the Best Visual Effects awards in the prestigious Academy Awards.

But before all that glamour, in 1991, he first formed part of the effects team that brought us Double Dragon and Angels in the Outfield. His experience as Visual Effects Supervisor were also put to the test in True Lies and A Time to Kill.

Aside from these works, he has also created a short video of Shrek in Shrek in the Swamp Karaoke Dance Party, as well as voiced in for a character in each of his Shrek films. In the first movie, he was the voice of the Duloc Mascot, while the follow-up movie saw him voicing for the Captain of the Guards. He has also lent his talents as a composer for the song Merry Men, also used in his first famous directorial masterpiece, Shrek.

And now that he’s taking the C. S. Lewis classic up on the big screen, Adamson says he will do his best to stay faithful to the books as much as possible, as he himself grew up reading the magical tales. For the first film, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, Adamson has signed on the special effects studio responsible for the wonderful effects of blockbuster The Lord of the Rings.

This undeniably talented and creative filmmaker has received quite a number of awards and nominations by a host of award-giving bodies. In 1996, he was nominated, along with John Dykstra, Thomas Fisher, and Eric Durst, for the Saturn Award for Best Special Effects for his work on Batman Forever. The hit Shrek brought him an Annie award for Outstanding Individual Achievement for Directing in an Animated Feature Production, an Audience Award from the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, and a BAFTA award for Best Feature Film, both of which he shared with fellow director Vicky Jenson.

Indeed, with such a gifted director at the helm, C. S. Lewis’s tale of magic and fantasy, and of good triumphing over evil, is certainly in good hands.
